PAROS

The Island of Crystal Beaches

..and Marble Masterpieces

Nestled in the heart of the Cyclades, Paros Island stands out as a premier Greek holiday destination. Visitors are drawn to its stunning beauty, long stretches of crystal-clear beaches, and breathtaking landscapes. The island also boasts a well-developed tourist infrastructure, ensuring a memorable holiday experience.

In ancient times, Paros was renowned for its white marble quarries. The highly prized 'Parian marble' was celebrated for its exceptional quality, making it a sought-after material for architecture and sculpture, especially during the Classical Greek Period. This pure white, translucent marble was used to create some of the most iconic masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture, including the statues of Hermes by Praxiteles, Venus de Milo (Aphrodite of Milos), Nike (Winged Victory) of Samothrace, Nike of Paionios, and the Caryatids, the famous daughters (korai) of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis in Athens.

Paros has been home to some of the most renowned sculptors, painters, and poets of ancient Greece. Throughout history, the island has served as an administrative and commercial hub in the Aegean Sea. It has also been a coveted prize for various conquerors, including the Romans, Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottomans, all of whom left their mark on the island. Paros has experienced periods of great prosperity, as evidenced by the ruins in its archaeological sites and its significant historical monuments, which can be explored across the island.

Mythology
According to mythology, the first king of Paros was Cretan Alkaios, who founded the ancient city that is now the capital, Parikia.

History
Archaeological evidence indicates that Paros has been inhabited since 3200 BC. Due to its strategic location in the center of the Cyclades, the island became a major naval base named Minoa during the Cretan era, trading with the Balkans and Egypt. The island was later ruled by the Ionians and then the Arcadians. In the 8th century BC, Paros emerged as a significant maritime power, establishing a colony on Thassos.

Paros is renowned for its high-quality Parian marble, used to create masterpieces such as the Aphrodite of Milos, Hermes of Praxiteles, the Temple of Apollo in Delos, and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio. This marble contributed to the island's development during classical times.

During the Persian Wars, Paros allied with the Persians and defeated the Athenian army. In 338 BC, the island fell under the Macedonian Empire and later came under the control of Alexander the Great's successors. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Paros became part of the Byzantine Empire, then the Duchy of the Aegean in 1207, and was later ruled by the Ottoman Empire until the Greek Revolution of 1821. Paros officially became part of the State of Greece in 1831.
